The Black Berkey® Elements are designed to remove heavy metals, but will not remove mineral salts, which are added by a water softener. The salt used to soften water will not be extracted by the Black Berkey® Element. You can use one of our filtration systems on a regular basis by bypassing your water softener to get your drinking water. Most water softeners have a bypass valve or way to get water before it passes through your softener. Therefore, we highly recommend that you obtain pre-softened water directly from the source rather than run softened water through your Black Berkey® Elements.
The Travel Berkey can hold 2 Black Berkey Elements and 2 Fluoride Filters, and comes with 2 Black Berkey Elements. The Big Berkey can hold 4 Black Berkey Elements and 4 Fluoride filters, and comes with 2 Black Berkey Elements. You can add 2 more Black Berkey Elements to increase the flow rate. If you add Fluoride filters, you must have the same number of Black Berkey Elements installed as well.
The Travel Berkey has a flow rate of 2.75 gallons (10.4 liters) per hour, and the Big Berkey has a flow rate of 3.5 gallons (13.3 liters) per hour when using the included two Black Berkey Elements; 7.0 gallons (26.5 liters) when using four Black Berkey Elements
No, the Berkey cannister is simple to setup. The filters will need to be primed before use and the system comes with a priming button and video directions through the TechnoRV Learning Series.
